The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) is a land-grant institution with a student body of more than 40,000 located in Madison, Wisconsin - only an hour and a half from Milwaukee and just over two hours from Chicago. Since its founding in 1849, UW-Madison has been at the forefront of publicly-supported higher education, research, and outreach in the United States. UW-Madison is unique among universities in the United States for the extensive number of foreign languages it offers to its students. Sixty-five languages from five continents are taught here.
At the orientation, FLTAs will be introduced to the communicative approach to teaching foreign languages and will be given the opportunity to demonstrate the teaching of their language using that approach. In addition, they will be introduced to issues such as teaching culture in a foreign language classroom, US academic culture and integrity, using the library for research, and the use of technology in foreign language teaching and learning.
